The Malibu Mirage is one of those aircraft names that just sticks in the mind – and no wonder. When you see this thing in the air for the first time you’ll likely be very impressed at the speed and consistency that it can pick up despite the fact that it does not look like much. Also, it’s been the skies for not too far off 30 years so it really is no surprise that the Malibu Mirage is starting to look a little dated.
That being said, it’s still one of the most enjoyable flights you can take on thanks to the ease of flying it – it’s a real pilots dream. It’s light and nimble nature added into the fact that it only uses one engine and five passengers means that you can easily pick up a fair amount of speed here, whilst also ensuring that the Malibu sticks with the tried and tested piston engine style.
It was first released in 1999 and from then on has become a rather popular member of the light aircraft world, giving the Piper PA range another nice little aircraft to have on the market for domestic purchases and usage in various formats.
The Malibu Mirage itself was a huge hit when it first arrived thanks to their stunning design and their – at the time – innovative cockpit installations. Although today they are quite dated compared to more modern equivalents, the Piper company who create them sell an estimated 30 Malibu Mirage aircraft every year!

Expanding the catalog of available American light aircraft, Carenado now introduce the wonderful Malibu Mirage for use in our favorite flight simulators. This add-on package can be downloaded immediately by users of Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Prepar3D. The Malibu Mirage is a Piper PA-46 variant that was first introduced in 1988 and has since undergone numerous changes from a strengthened wing design, to a real glass windshield instead of an acrylic glass one, and the relocation of certain switches to the overhead console.
The finely sculpted 3D model mirrors its real life counterpart with finesse. The soft curves and narrow wings create an attractive and identifiable silhouette, and the level of detail that can be seen up close is quite remarkable. Made all the more impressive by high resolution (2048 x 2048) textures that provide more than just a lick of paint, but provide depth and detail that would be unachievable with lower resolution textures.
Each of the five different liveries included in this package are simple and stylish, with designs the flow with the shape of the aircraft in an humble fashion, and offer slight variations in color to suite a range of tastes. Intelligent alpha channel technology is used to create superb material shines and reflections that react to both aircraft lights and natural lights in a realistic manner. Likewise, the virtual cockpit is very well modeled, with numerous gauges, switches and readouts set against a cool gray panel.
With accurate reflections on the instruments and realistic night lights that create a soft orange glow around the panel, the cockpit can be both a bustling, active space, or a quiet, contemplative one.
In order to achieve maximum authenticity, the flight dynamics have been tested by real pilots; ensuring that performance and handling, as well as the weight and balance of the aircraft, feel as close to the real thing as possible. This extra effort is greatly appreciated, as it allows you to feel more so, the powerful 350hp engine in front of you.
Paired with an original digital sound set recorded live from the real thing, you're left with an incredibly atmospheric and inviting experience that you couldn't have with any other Malibu Mirage.
