F-104G Starfighter for FSX/FS20044 reviews
Having been made to deliver the ultimate flight experience for fighters back in the day, this was a massively impressive aircraft. However, it's sleek and cool nature was balanced out by the fact that it was so incredibly hard to fly. This is more or less a J-79 turbojet, equipped with tiny wings and a place for the pilot to sit down comfortable. The aircraft, although crammed looking, was a hugely powerful tool that was capable of blindingly quick attacks and assaults on the opposition thanks to its incredible pace and its huge speeds that were well capable of exceeding Mach 2.0. It easily became one of the most popular aircraft of the team, slowly being phased out of service in the late 1960s. However, at this point it was being used as interceptors and training aircraft for the German, Italian and Canadian forces. The last fighter retired from active service in Italy in 2004.
This remake manages to capture its beauty and its quality perfectly, giving you the absolutely most impressive range of additions possible as well as ensuring that the aircraft handled, controlled and managed itself in the right way. It ensures that the Starfighter offers some genuinely useful solutions when using a simulator.
- 5 loadout variations with 3 detailed texture sets

- F-104G, Luftwaffe long range (wing tanks and tip tanks)
- F-104G, German Navy, strike (tip tanks and Bullpups)
- F-104G, German Navy, interceptor (Sidewinders and wing tanks)
- F-104S, Italian AF (Sidewinders and Sparrows)
This aircraft is designed to carry four separate flight models, all of which are designed to the very highest levels and specifications. When it's all put together and it looks the part, you are left with one of the easiest and most effective ways to start managing and looking after your flight thanks to the unique handling, range and style on each of the models. It's not just four re-shuffles that all have the same attributes; these changes will make a tangible difference to the way that you fly and the things you'll try when using each model
The FSX version of this mod also comes with an awesome new radar system, which has been enabled and made fully functional. This is capable of tracking an unlimited range of targets whilst giving you an ID, aircraft type, heading and altitude reading. This lets you stay on target of what you are doing and what may be up ahead, minimizing the risk that you are taking when flying around. Likewise, it comes with various profile settings that allow you to change things like the range. This can be edited on the 2D panels via a specific pop-up panel
This latest model takes after the rest of the features in that it includes full FSX graphical features. This includes things like bump mapping, self-shadowing and also bloom flashing. This all looks excellent and, when it's all joined together, provides a truly stunning atmosphere to take to the skies with
This comes with a completely professional and fantastically well simulated F-104 soundset. This ensures that it also comes with the unique "howling" Nosie that this aircraft can make, which naturally gives you an extra bit of strength and credibility when you are up in the skies, making it sound even more fantastic
The virtual cockpit has been built from scratch to ensure that it delivers on all of the best features and styles. The virtual cockpit is naturally a very important tool in a simulator and this is no more easy to spot than it is when you use this. With mousable controls and stunning animations all built up from scratch you can get the help that you need in making all of this come together and actually look great. The provided level of functionality, though, is one of the most impressive parts of the whole thing as it makes it much easier to start flying without any real problems
More or less entirely XML 2D panels are included in here. Each of the sections comes with a unique range of features and customized pop-ups made from scratch for things like using autopilot and the radio features that are included
An automatic, on-throttle- animated afterburner effect will kick in when you are flying around. It creates a specific level of performance, too, as it speeds you up and ensures that you will start to produce the signature smoke trail that an aircraft of this profile and power is capable of doing
The wing surface has vapor flash and wing-top vortices included, and the effects provided form this very specific design is one of the most impressive features of the whole thing. Makes it much easier to see the unique nature and design of the wings when compared to other, similar, aircraft
Awesome animations have been made from scratch here, with many hours of hard work and preparation being put in along the way to ensure that the animations that are being used are of the most stunning style possible. Each of them uses animated tailhooks, speedbrakes and the like to ensure that the whole thing can be as well animated as it possibly can be. It also comes with a selectable pilot figure who makes it very easy to fly around and feel like you aren't piloting some kind of evil ghost ship! The perfect solution for anyone who needs a bit of extra realism thrown in there. Animated canopies are also included to add another nice little layer of detail
The crew figure is incredibly well animated, capturing the depth and style of his look as best as possible. The uniform and the general design of the figure has been taken extremely seriously with a range of features and additions being put in place to make him stand out as much as possible
The realistic, awesome rain effects that drop down on the aircraft windows will look awesome, giving FS9 users a chance for an extra layer of realism

Virtavia has a focus on military aircraft add-ons compatible with FSX, Prepar3D, and X-Plane. Focusing on historic and modern military aircraft, their add-ons have been well received by flight sim pilots and rated highly.
SimShack stock the entire range of Virtavia add-ons and continue to list any new versions or releases announced by Virtavia.

The Lockheed Starfighter is fast, has great visibility and is easy to fly as long as a 200 knot stall speed is observed. That means power-on landing at 220 knots, chop power 10 feet over the runway. Power management requires an eagle eye on fuel flow, 9 for takeoff, 4 in the pattern. Rotate at 200, gear and flaps up simultaneously, power back immediately to stay around 300 indicated, 1500 feet traffic pattern altitude. Turns are wide and shallow, the stall light right in front of you helps. Gear speed is 300 and flap speed is 260 knots. Full flaps on final; they work, just watch that airspeed all the way down. Yaw is very stable. Pitch is polite but requires trim. Roll can be unstable and dangerous. The single engine provides good power, but the delivery is non-linear, and shuts off under certain in the pattern conditions (I suspect airflow into the intakes at certain angles of attack at low speed, low power problem)! She loops from 25,000; power at 4, invert and pitch. She'll troth at 11,000, who knows the airspeed, zooms to 35,000 on her back again; 20,000 foot loops. Departing Las Vegas on 222 to 33,000 feet on the 113.6, max juice past 10,000, hit auto pilot at cruise altitude and watch the mach meter try to go beyond do not exceed, about mach 2.0. Land in Los Angeles with 50% fuel remaining (wing tank equipped). This is the fastest bird I ever flight sim flew. Buy it!

I was pleasantly surprised by the accurate flight model of the F-104, The high-speed stall characteristics are pretty much on, as well as the low speed. I was Surprised that the designers caught the behavior of the boundary layer control system as well! Hint- don't close the throttle completely when landing- you lose a big chunk of lift to to the BLC when power is set to idle, and you will dump it short of the runway! You must leave some power on when landing- just like the real thing. Excellent modelling! I have yet to test the inertia roll coupling, but we'll see.
The graphics are OK, but could be improved, I guess. Update rates are about standard. It would be nice to have a radar that works, and a missile shoot capability, but that's OK for now. I'm enjoying improving my sim flying skills with the F-104, and it's lots of fun.
All in all, I'm very happy with my F-104.
