The Diamond DA40 is an aircraft that looks like something from a curtain – it’s short, sharp and cuddly!

With this cool little aircraft, you can experience a different kind of flight simulation. Thanks to this Alabeo take on the mod, you can get something that is a really interesting take on this cool little aircraft, making sure you can enjoy something a little bit fresher and something that injects its own personality into things. For an aircraft that is its own style and is not going to bow down to anyone else in terms of how it should fly or how it should operate, this is for you.

Major Improvements

  • Makes use of the Vision Microsystems VM 1000 Engine Instrument, which is a fitting and impressive module to have included. Not only does this improve overall flight control but it should help make you feel more comfortable as a pilot.

  • Two default X-Plane 10 GNS430 modules are being used, too, for increased navigational function and to help your flights be more accurate. If you struggle to get around the world with impunity when flying this brilliant piece of kit, you’ll love the addition of these extra modules, balancing your flight out further.

  • Makes use of a solid range of high quality 3D model designs and textures to help blend everything together. From the correct scale and size to the textures carrying the exact color templates that you would see on the real Diamond DA40, this sells authenticity with ease.

  • Brings a cool little volumetric side prop effect to the simulator, helping you see the aircraft from numerous different angles. A very cool little addition and one that should make flying this aircraft as fun – and as simple – as it possibly can be.

  • A blank texture is included for anyone who has an artistic style to them and who wants to try and create their own liveries. The perfect way to make sure you are flying an aircraft that matches the style you want – you could even advertise your own company or your favorite football team. The choice is yours entirely!

  • Makes use of solid flight characteristics and dynamics to make sure it does more than just look the part. This flies with the beauty and the authority of the original, helping you manage your flights and stay on target at all times, with a model that feels and flies true to the real thing.

  • Compatible with all 64-bit machines for easy usage no matter what hardware you are running.

  • Enhanced with the use of plug-ins that go a long way to helping you get the more accurate flight performance that you are likely to find in a simulator today.

  • FPS-optimized so that you can get the best balance between a safe and comfortable flight and an easy to manage, effective design that is easy on the machine. The finest balance between performance and realism.

  • Makes use of full support for the SuperManipulator scroll wheel, adding even better functionality and control than ever before.

I was in one these not too long ago, and when I saw that Alabeo had created this Diamond DA40 for X-Plane, I thought it might be fun to try and recreate my flight. I've seen Alabeo's products before and always thought they looked pretty good, but this was the first time that I've put money down just because I wanted the aircraft, whereas I would usually go on recommendations from friends and other pilots in my community.

While I wasn't able to perfectly recreate my flight, the aircraft itself is the only bit that I got right - or rather, Alabeo got it right for me. The DA40 is quite a quirky light aircraft, sort of surprising in a lot of small ways. Personally, I think it looks great. I love the dihedral wing design, that admittedly isn't for aesthetics, and serves an actual purpose of elevating the wing tips from the runway surface. The real life DA40, is made of composite materials, which is quite a tricky thing to portray in a model such as this. Nevertheless, the high quality textures deliver enough detail to satisfy my need for good visuals.

I was able to fly this DA40 with zero fuss and zero complaints from my hardware; my frame rates never wavered so I guess the FPS-optimized model was doing its job there. It's been a long time since I have no frame rate issues, and it really is nice when they stay smooth. I often find myself putting a cap on my FPS so that it doesn't bounce around as much, but this is a much more satisfying solution.

Near as I can tell, from not actually having flown this aircraft myself and merely being a passenger, the flight dynamics are very accurate. The models real life counterpart may have felt like it had a bit more pull, but then it was equipped with a G1000, so there may have been other differences that affected its performance. Either way, Alabeo created a great version of the DA40 that looks and feels close enough to the real thing to have me perfectly content with this now in my collection.

The Flight Model, 3D-Model, graphics are great, but it would be better if the X-Plane "native" G1000 would be used. The Alabeo G1000 has certain issues with the integration (database, window handling on multi monitor setup and so on). Also I have significant performance issues with this plane (even when I disable reflections and so on).

Unfortunately, in the current state (v3.2) it is unusable for me and I had to go back to the X-Plane C172 for my IFR training.
