It's time for a ceremonial fly-by and a tip of the wings! The best selling flight simulator of all time has released its 10th edition: Microsoft Flight Simulator X is the latest and greatest chapter in a real software success story. No other flight simulator has come close in market share.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold Edition delivers both the core program and the powerful Flight Simulator X: Acceleration expansion package. There is so much content Microsoft decided it was time to make this the first version delivered on DVDs! It is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X, released in 2006, is the product of 25 years of innovation. It lets pilots explore the entire globe with dozens of aircraft and exciting missions. For example, Free Flight sets users free to fly anywhere they choose: Want to take short jaunts exploring the area around home? No problem. Or perhaps new countries and exotic locales beckon? Everything is possible.

This is a truly rich gaming environment with boatloads of new technology, improved graphics, and increased realism. Pilots will experience realistic weather, seasons and time of day. They can watch cars move on the ground below, and marvel at the detail in each building in the cities, the traffic on the freeways, farmhouses, and animals, as well as natural habitats full of indigenous wildlife.

Deluxe Vs. Gold Editions

What is the difference between the Deluxe edition and Gold edition? Flight Simulator has three different flavors: first Standard, later Deluxe, and now Gold. The Deluxe release provides extra features including

  • A software development kit (SDK).
  • Three aircraft that featured the Garmin G1000 Flightdeck.
  • Optional Air Traffic Control including a radar screen.
  • 24 aircraft. (Standard Edition shipped with 18).
  • 45 high-detail airports. (Standard Edition has 40).
  • 38 high-detail cities. (Standard Edition has 28).
  • 51 structured missions. (Standard Edition has 30+).

The Gold Edition pairs the Deluxe package with the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration Pack into one product.

New Features and Upgrades

Microsoft Flight Simulator X included many new features and upgrades. Microsoft Flight Simulator's development team has listened closely to the user community. Since the last iteration of the product, they have gathered input from pilots, users, and designers and plugged them into their decision process.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X is the result. It takes complete advantage of the latest Windows technology to paint beautiful 3-D worlds for aviation aficionados of all ages to explore. The improvements in graphics, aircraft, and scenery will amaze every fan.

Realistic details like sunshine reflecting off of glass shaded rivets, and a detailed fuselage provides a level of realism never seen before. Gameplay is also at a whole new level with exciting new missions that will develop pilot's skills, and provide a sense of purpose and adventure with every flight. Improvements in the multiplayer technology let pilots interact with each other in new and exciting ways.

Improved Graphics

The new features in Flight Simulator X include a host of upgrades including significantly improved graphic imagery with:

  • Improved textures.
  • Completely new Earth model that accommodates polar flights.
  • Accurate road data.
  • Textures specific to each region.
  • 3D animals.
  • Constellations of stars.
  • Scene textures automatically align with buildings.
  • Users can look forward to exploring 24,000 airports spread over every continent on earth.

The aircraft selection has been improved including a new Airbus A321. Aircraft systems including fire protection, CPU, and passenger advisory sign indicators have all been improved.

Weather systems have been upgraded including better models for visibility. Multiplayer functionality has been redone with a new feature called shared skies, which lets multiple users share the same aircraft cockpit. They can choose to be the pilot, copilot or air traffic control. The Tower Controller feature lets users take local control of the ATC during multiplayer games. The sound system has been totally upgraded with support for surround sound (5.1).

Over 50 Missions

There are now more than 50 missions with a few extra in the Acceleration Pack. Dynamic missions can be created with control over many variables including AI air traffic, sound files, and more. This is an evolutionary step in programming from the APL and ABL languages used in previous editions of the program.

Several vintage aircraft have been eliminated from this release. The only two that remain are the DC-3 and Piper J3. Both are used in default missions contained in the core product.

Airport jetways can move right to the airplanes with designated keystroke combinations. Airport baggage cars, fuel vehicles, and push trucks also drive to the aircraft. Air Traffic Control has been upgraded with a better progressive-taxi method.

Increased Altitude

Other changes include the altitude, which has been increased to 100,000,000 feet. This altitude is around 2.3 times greater than the Earth's diameter! The virtual cockpit includes camera shaking as the aircraft experiences turbulence, banking, acceleration, and braking. Realistic wing flex has been added to several aircraft including the Boeing 747-400. The wings will flex during major movements including turbulence and full extension of flaps.

Wave imagery has been improved with 3-D waves complete with light refraction depending on wave movement and reflection from the sun.  Players can more easily take screenshots during gameplay. A simple press of the "V" key grabs a screenshot and saves it in the "My Pictures" folder as a bitmap image (.bmp).

Aircraft can now cast shadows on their own body. The interiors use different files from the exteriors. This makes it easier for developers to create separate exteriors from completely different interiors created by another use.

Wide Variety of Aircraft

Aircraft include jetliners, seaplanes, fighter jets, helicopters, prop planes, an ultralight and a glider. Featured aircraft include:

  • Airbus A321
  • Air Creation 582-SL Trike Ultralight
  • Agusta Westland AW101

Artificial Intelligence

Aircraft marked "AI only" indicates Artificial Intelligence. They are for background and scenery only and cannot be piloted. They are often used in missions to provide ambiance. The "AI only" aircraft shown here is the Piper Cherokee, McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and the DeHavilland Dash 8. Here's a little secret, though: developers and flight sim enthusiasts have created several add-ons that allow these aircraft to be flyable! They can be found on various sites around the web.

Several missions have extra AI aircraft that are not available to the user during normal Free Flight operation:

  • Flight 19 TBM Avenger ghost planes from Lost in the Triangle.
  • Antonov AN-225, Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A380-800 in the Jet Truck Drag Race, Loopy Larry and Paris Airshow.
  • Caspian Sea Monster in Tokyo Executive Transport and Aleutian Cargo Run.
  • Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde in the Jet Truck Drag Race and Loopy Larry.
  • UFOs in Secret Shuttle--there are two different types. The first practically crash right into you. The second type is dramatic-looking black UFOs shaped like triangles. One can be seen coming into Area 51 just before touching down, and another one is parked to the side.
  • There are also UFOs, one small one and another larger one, in the background in High Altitude Intercept. (Part of the Acceleration Pack.)
  • Different versions of helicopters and military jets, for example, the Being B-52 Stratofortress and the F22 Raptor, can be seen in a wide range of missions including Tutorial 11: Helicopter Maneuvers 1, Loopy Larry, Jet Truck Drag Race, Civil Air Patrol Search, Tutorial 1: First Take-off, Flour Power, Catalina Day Spa and Africa Relief.
  • Tutorial 1: First Take-off and Secret Shuttle both have a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
  • Secret Shuttle users will see a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II as well as a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
  • The imposing Boeing B-52H Stratofortress is seen in several missions including Executive Tour, Loopy Larry, and Tutorial 1: First Take-off.
  • Executive Tour and Tutorial 1: First Take-off features an F-117 Nighthawk and a V-22 Osprey.
  • Paris Airshow Demonstration Flight, Tutorial 1: First Takeoff and Secret Shuttle have an F-22 Raptor and Su-37 Flanker.
  • Rocket Launch Air Cover mission players should look for a NASA rocket called "Delta V". It can be seen next to an Atlas V 500 rocket.
  • Other aircraft seen in missions include a Focke Wulf FW 190 Fighter, Messerschmitt Me 410 Multirole Fighter-Bomber/Reconnaissance, Hughes XF-11 Reconnaissance Aircraft, Douglas XB-19 Heavy Bomber, Antonov AN-32 Transport/Bomber, Messerschmitt BF 109 Fighter, Antonov AN-12 Military transport aircraft, BAe Jetstream 41 Regional Airliner, and a Convair B-58 Hustler Military jet fighter. The B-58 cannot actually be seen, but audio refers to it as, "a vintage B-58 that needs to be recovered."

Airlines

FSX Gold ships with several fictional airlines. The only real airline is Kenmore Air. The other airlines are:

  • Airwave Airlines has aircraft available in AI mode only including the McDonnell Douglas MD-83, and the de Havilland Canada DHC-8.
  • American Pacific Airlines has a de Havilland Canada DHC-8 in AI mode, and "Callsign only" in the standard livery.

Acceleration Pack

In the Acceleration Pack, players can qualify for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship Racing Team. Players in multiplayer mode can engage in several racing styles: Reno high-speed, sailplane, cross-country and aerobatics. Players can challenge each other in three different skill levels from pylon racing to harsh weather battles.

The Acceleration Package also includes three new aircraft: the EH-101 chopper, the F/A-18A Hornet and the P-51D Mustang. The package also introduces scenery such as Cape Canaveral, Istanbul, Edwards Air Force Base and Berlin. There are 20 new missions from being a test pilot to exciting search and rescues. Pilots can interact with other players around the corner, or around the world in real time over their headsets and keyboards. They can even share photos and videos with each other, and the flight community in general.

Setup is much easier this time around and the program supports specific features of Windows Vista, like Parental Controls and the Games Explorer.  Users can rest assured that their code will be completely up to date with the Acceleration Pack because it includes both Service Pack One and Service Pack Two.

Amazon User Reviews

Jon L. Albee said,

"Flight simulation for your PC just doesn't get any better than this. Microsoft has been at this for a long time, and they make it better with every release."

Bruce L. Torelli said,

"I'm using MS Flight Sim with a CH Yoke to practice cockpit procedures as I work through my pilot instrument rating. I believe it's saving me 100s of dollars to practice cognitive and interpretation skills before going out and spending big bucks flying them in a real airplane, when I'm much busier. It's been great for basic maneuvers, flying VOR radial intercepts, and holds."

Carol A. Harris said,

"Warning - after long periods of time playing, may actually feel like you're still flying when you are done."

Minimum System Requirements

Not everyone was a fan, however. Some users complained that the program was slow. Usually, this is a case of not enough computing power. Microsoft recommends these minimum requirements:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7
  • Processor: 1.0 GHz
  • RAM: Windows XP SP2 - 256MB, Windows Vista - 512MB
  • Hard Drive: 14GB
  • Video Card: 32MB DirectX 9 compatible
  • Other: DX9 hardware compatibility and audio board with speakers and/or headphones
  • Online/Multiplayer Requirements: 56.6 kbps or better for online play

In reality, most users will find they need more firepower. 4GB RAM (or more) and powerful video cards will help tremendously.

Gold Standard

Microsoft has been the market leader in flight simulation for so long they have become the benchmark other programs must match. They have achieved the creation of a product that people of all ages can enjoy, no matter their experience level. Complete beginners, intermediate flyers, and even real pilots will be able to test their skills with Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

The Gold Edition makes things even more fun with plenty of new aircraft, scenes, and missions. As soon as it hit the market, Microsoft Flight Simulator Gold Edition established itself as the best edition ever of the top-selling flight simulator of all time. In short, the Gold Edition is the Gold standard in flight simulation!

This is the first and only non-combat flight simulator that I have ever used. I am not a real-life pilot (yet).

I was greatly intrigued by flying; now I am completely hooked and am an avid "flusi".

This program is truly amazing, allowing you to fly a great variety of aircraft that have been provided and you can do so all over the world. There are tens of thousands of correctly-placed and labeled airfields available. If you fly using IFR (instrument flight rules), all of the equipment and support required for this is set up for use in the game. Weather is present, either of your own choosing at the moment, or current weather data for anywhere can be instantly imported and is ready for use during your flight. At any time in a flight, you can pause and change basically everything right in mid-air: aircraft, altitude, direction, wind direction and strength, time of day, position on the earth......... get the picture?

A short break here - if you want to fly and do it well, you simply must buy, at a minimum, a good yoke (steering wheel) and rudder pedals (and if you use a helicopter, also a joystick. I also believe that a separate throttle control makes life much easier. OK, back to the software...

For beginners, you can set the reality very low and concentrate on basics, if you desire. For more advanced flyers or for the bold, like me, you can set all things to full reality from the beginning on. It is all up to you and you can, of course, modify such things concerning many individual flying characteristics as you go.

There are even flight lessons included as well as some missions that you can fly and earn some little rewards to make you feel good.

Everything that you need, from a software point of view, is here and ready to use in a very good program that is well worth the money invested.

That completes my review of this product.

A couple of extra notes if you care to hear more. These are based on many thousands of hours of flusi adventures using MS FSX (Microsoft Flight Simulator X), naturally gold (or with acceleration):

This program is quite old, so the graphics are not the newest of the new. But, I find that the world looks wonderful and there is just so much there, that to make the world up-to-date would probably overtax most pcs out there.

After discovering just what joy I could get out of the quiet challenges of difficult landings and the excitement of really navigating just like a real-world pilot does, I became hooked. This condition has motivated me to want my experience to be as realistic and beautiful and exciting as possible. Thus, I have since bought many, many, many add-on things.

Here are my recommendations:

1) Equipment - A separate throttle quadrant for aircraft (I use a programmable Saitek 3-axis lever) and an extra throttle flight controller / joystick set for helicopters to get a more realistic feel for each (a Saitek X52 is my choice here). - If your budget is not constrained, buy a TrackIR head tracking device. I hesitated long because of the cost, but this device made such a great difference in my ability to fly realistically. With it, you can move your view around by moving your head and you can really see like in real life. Rotating a joystick button really feels like the stone ages afterwards. Unbelievably good (and it also works in some ego shooters and such).

2) Software - improve your terrain detail and the correctness of the things displayed for individual parts of the world to a great extent by purchasing global add-ons. I have tried every single one of these that are available. I am trying to save you some work (and money), so I highly recommend the Ground Environment X from Flight One. Try one out and see if the eye candy value is right for you.

There are many internet sites out there that sell things as well as offering tons of software missions, airports, areas, cities, etc. for free. It took me a long time to compile a very useful list of these. This site is of course one of these. So, go out and have fun looking.

Have a great flight!

I consider Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold Edition one of most sophisticated product issued in flight simulation's field compared with other products for the time being.

I purchased this product almost three years ago. I tested well all this program items and I'm satisfied with all.

Learning Center: Is a good introduction for this program, provides users with well organised essential Key topics to go fast throughout the program. Site map articles support you with all basic aeronautical information you need about the program. Index list is generally well classified one let users to search and find easily experiences they are looking for, it considered as a good reference list for the program. Lessons section is a generous class let users gain well explained flying lessons as it supports good aeronautical introduction information for all users' levels either you are student pilot, private pilot, commercial pilot or even experienced airliner transport pilot.

Settings: Are very easy to change and compatible with all requirements. Once you change your aircraft type you can choose settings compatible with your selection. Settings compatibility are also applied for weather, traffic and other items listed over this program.

Missions: The fifty one missions already installed are nice and attractive. They meet all user skill levels either you are beginner, intermediate, advanced or even an expert. They are also cover all categories used and known in flight simulation field specifically at some certain pilot cases such as emergency, challenges and pilot for hire.

Free Flight: Over free flight page user can select his aircraft from a variety aircraft's list already installed with different types he like; this is up to his aeronautical background and his flying information. The user here is of course free to select to fly on board a glider, rotorcraft, single or twin engine aircraft, and turbo or jet models. The most advantage item of this wonderful program is the Location, as user can take off and land over 24000 different airports all over the world. User can fly from destination to another comfortably with different time and season and also in different kind of weather conditions up to his request.

Once you achieve a flight and you enjoyed or you like it, you can record a clip or save your flight in load flight list to re-fly once again later, of course after create a flight plan. this advantage cannot be found in other flight simulation products.

Finally, I feel enjoy once I fly over this program. I feel satisfaction when I spend some of my time with this awesome product. Really it is a good step and large jump off an sophisticated technology. It will be so important here to reregister my recommendation for this product to my relatives, friends and for those who looks for flying enhancements.

It is a good product, good job have been done by Microsoft Flight simulation Team. Thanks for experts who participate to achieve this valued job. I'm grateful and I appreciate their hard efforts to let this product comes on.

Thanks for Microsoft Flight Simulation Team. Good luck for another more improvement product.

Flight Sim X is disappointing. I paid $70.00 for the deluxe edition only to find it runs like crap. The frame rates are horrible , and don't even think of putting all the settings on ultra high.. you'll get around 2fps. at best. The graphics aren't anything like they show on the TV. There is a slight improvement, but of course theres money to be made when the ground enhancement programs come out later. Microsoft says in order to have a decent running sim, you have to "trade off" ground graphics vs clouds, or what have you. I shouldn't have to "trade off" any of the settings to get it to run properly. I put good money down on this and find the graphics and sky in 2004 Century of Flight is better. One guy said on one of the forums that he even had installed a 3.2 GZ processor in the hopes the sim would run better.. He said it didn't make anymore difference in the frame rate than his previously installed 2.4 G processor. So whats up? Was Microsoft in such a rush to get it on the market that they couldn't pay attention to the details like frame rates ? They also said Windows Vista will make the flight sim more enjoyable. That may be true, but although I've gotten a new pc for an early Xmas present, a lot of people cant afford a new machine in the hopes that the sim would run better. Anyway,, thats my 2 cents worth. Once i finally install my new pc. ( my husband wont let me open it until Dec. 25th .. lol.. ), i may reinstall FSX or i might go ahead and put FS2004 in. And yes, the other person who stated that you need a supercomputer from NASA to run it is right.. I think thats the only computer that can run the game the way its supposed to be. Personally with the bad frame rates with the graphics set so they look decent, its not worth the money. Stick to the earlier versions of Flight Simulator.

Forget the rest steam is best I feel the comments are a little harsh I want to try help you guys. I've been a flight sim fan since the start

Simple facts I have used them all and nothing has Come close to steam fsx for not crashing error messages Ect You do need to do a bit of work like Like correct drivers updates

A few web sites to download a few things But after you have it will run perfectly and Addons will work Rex orbx scenery FTx gsx

Saitek gauges will work with steam fsx Its great I have tried p3d Had nothing but crashes freeze screens

3d pilot is a scam

X plane8 9 and 10 is ok but everywhere you fly looks the same I still after years can't get it to start up and run And its not user friendly like steam is .

I use steam on one i7 with loads of addon s Saitek gauges the fantastic panel builder software And it works. 6 monitors pro atc panel builder and it runs everything Perfectly also use airtrack on I pads linked to steam and simple pads It works so save you money and hours of time and stick with fsx steam That's my advice to you guys . I have spent hundreds of hours p###ing About with all the sims and steam is the only one that is quite stable I have to a support link on our web site Www.bkcockpits.co.uk where I personally will help simmers Fly hours for hours NOT spend hours trying to get the program to run So they can fly . All in all its great steam is mean love it Happy with it it simply works and with my help I will have you guys flying with all ur addons and hardware working as it should With fsuipc 4 simconnect panel builder and software Its great but u will need to set it up properly use bkcockpits support I will help in anyway I can to resolve issues Long live fsx steam I say :-)

I am using MS Flightsimulator since the first version on an Apple ][. Upgraded always. When FSX-SE came I gave it a try. I am running FSX-SE on a desktop PC with an i7 processor, 16 GB RAM and a NVIDIA GTX670 with 2 GB memory. Three monitors. I am having less problems with FSX-SE than I had with FSX Gold Edition. Even several aircraft that I bought for FSX are now running without problems in FSX-SE. Ten days ago I bought from SimShack.net the Alabeo Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375 because it was cheaper than the same DLC that is sold on FSX-SE. It performs excellent on FSX-SE. Last weekend, when there were some discounts for FSX-SE on Steam, I bought some add-ons, among it the "Cargo Crew" DLC with the DC3 missions. The only negative experience I had with this Cargo Crew DLC was during the 2nd mission, that I could not declare to ATC the emergency that occurred (failure of the right engine). So ATC did not know about the fact I was flying the DC3 on one engine and that this was the reason to divert to Manchester (EGCC). Then Manchester Tower ordered me to perform a go-around when I was on short finals. I was not able to get the aircraft climbing to the assigned altitude of 2.500 FT forcing me to end the mission. So this felt unrealistic. But this experience has not much to do with the performance of FSX-SE itself. I have flown already 122 hours within FSX-SE. I also made some flights connected to the IVAO network under control of an IVAO ATC'er while also using other apps like TeamSpeak and Aerosofts FSC9. I am also able to set the radio's and navaids with the Aerosoft's RadioStackX app on my Ipad2. So, putting everything together I can say that I am satisfied with the performance of FSX-SE.

First of all...stop using sh.ty WINDOWS 10!!! This what widows 7 64 bit offers nowadays is surly enought for everything. I Can not understand negative opinions about FSX SE. This program is not for lazy ppl. You need to have some oil in the head to get this working, if you dont have oil and you are lazy to read in google how to do it, drop this. But SE is worth of it. 3 days takes instalation but then FSX SE puts other sims on the knees.

Im user FS since 15 years. Compare FSX SP 2 to FSX SE I can say that those are a two completly diferent products. Witch one is beter? Of course STEAM EDITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At the beginig it was wome problems with compatibility SE with hunderds of addons. Now every thing works perfectly. Im using, FTX global, vector, REX 4, FTX norway, fs passengers, ezdok, face track (alternate track IR), A2A, Carenado, PMDG, shade and many more, everything on max HD settings MAXED OUT, + I have used fstweaker not to get this working smoothly but to look FSX beter!!!! buildings visibility on 50 KM !!! Everything thatnks to new steam edition and its optimalization. It runs smoothly (30 FPS) on I5 4670K 3,9 GHZ (no OC), GTX 960 strix, 32 GB RAM (12 is enought)

What is improoved is SE? PERFORMANCE Come back to WIN 7 and put into steam edition whatever you want. I recomended this product to my friend and he is very hapy :D

What we are missing is to use AI ATC and traffic in multiplayer sesion. We would like to fly together in one plane but with AI ATC and traffic. I know VATSIM and I fly there too, but it sad when airport or airspace is almost empty nearby.

Greetings to all

FSX Steam Edition - Dovetail

I was very excited when this Steam Edition of FSX first came out. Although I had the box edition of FSX already installed and running with no problems using many additional aircraft, scenery, and other add ons - the reviews were so optimistic that I immediately purchased thinking I'd be getting better frame rates (from what others were saying).

What a mistake! I could not get the SE version to run. Following advice, I uninstalled my current boxed version. Second mistake!

However, I kept hearing how compatibility was being improved by Dovetail addressing different issues for different third-party add-ons so I thought I would be patient with this beta software. Third mistake!

And so every so often, when a new release comes out I spend hours deleting the previous installation, download the latest fresh installation (no add-ons) and try again. Fourth mistake! No luck!

Every so often I spend hours reading what passes for support, trying to tweak it into life. Fifth mistake!

This has happened for each new SE release. I have spent hours downloading, unable to even get the SE version to start, looking for support, but to no avail!

I have spent several decades working for blue chip IT companies such as IBM, Hewlett Packard, Chase Manhattan, etc so I'm not exactly a newbie at this (and like I said, I had a perfect box set installation with lots of add-ons running flawlessly previously).

How do I rate this product nil point (zero stars)?

For those who desire a highly technical, realistic flight simulation, or for those just wanting to jump into something and fly, Microsoft Flight Simulator X has been the best answer. With Dovetail Simulations acquisition of this platform, there has never been a better time to take flight.

Updates offered through Steam have dramatically improved the quirky and somewhat troublesome code that at one time relied solely on enthusiasts in the community to release unofficially. Although not 64 bit, it has been optimised for multi-core and higher memory machines: a much needed improvement since its initial inception.

Multiple third-party developers are on-board with high-fidelity add ons to further increase this platforms' value and realism.

I have enjoyed Microsoft Flight Simulator X since the original release, even with its inherent problems. Now that Dovetail is managing to breathe new life into this package with updates, while maintaining backwards compatibility, it is a great time to consider using FSX for training, or simply for recreation.

For those who are familiar with FSX, it's has been revived and improved, with new content being added all the time. For those who have never had the experience, now is the perfect time to see what flying to almost any airport in the world is like.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X:Steam Edition comes highly recommended by this experienced simulator pilot.

I decidedl to install SE late last year and have not been disappointed....it is smoother and the overall quality is significantly better than before, even on my same equipment. Why? I guess their tweaks have removed many of the bugs. I've successfully and easily transferred many of my scenery and planes across with no issue. Even instant scenery worked first time.. Most posts I read show a lack of understanding from those who seem to have issues. Working through instructions and thinking about how files work, there should be little problem in making SE work well. It's great to download purchases into the sim, they are so easy. The graphics are super, weather especially looks so realistic. All planes work as they should, even complex ones. I've loved the change and if this is what's been done with an existing sim, imagine how good a new sim will be. One thing I've learned over 20 years in this hobby, the majority have no problems at all, and the few who do complain would complain even if you gave them something for nothing, and they probably struggle turn their computer on, as there is no reason at all for systems not to run this program unless the user is doing something wrong.....computers don't have a mind of their own and decide to muck up a program for the fun of it.

Before installing FSX Steam I had been running the disc version (Gold edition). When it did run properly it was great, but I lost count of the number of times I had to reinstall the disc software due to recurrent program crashes. Trying to do a clean reinstall was also a nightmare too. Residual files from the previous install made it a difficult process. I would spend 3 times the amount of time resolving problems than I was actually able to fly. Since downloading and running Steam FSX I've not had one single program crash. The overall quality of the sim, in my opinion, is a 100% improvement. I really only fly helicopters (payware add ons) and so I have no complaints at all as far as quantity of available aircraft to chose from. Similarly, I have payware add on scenery too rather than the default scenery. Again, ive experienced no problems or software conflicts. I'm also getting far better framerates with the Steam version. Ok, it needs to have an Internet connection in order to run it, but thats no big issue as far as I'm concerned. Once the sim loads up it's time to fly, rather than time to resolve crash issues. If I had to make a choice between Steam or the disc software, I'd definitely opt for FSX Steam every time.

I just read the last post. I would totally disagree with you. I have been running Windows 10 since it came out. There have been absolutely no problems with it in any way shape or form. I have 3 PC's and all of them run great. FSX Dove-tale edition has proven to be the next jen of simulation. Speaking from years of experience with boxed FSX. Dovetail has made the system work with almost every software add on I have. Currently my add ons sit about 100 including scenery, aircraft, weather generation, ground add ons, and AI traffic. Great job guys!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for re working this platform its proving to be frame rate friendly and has never crashed on me yet. I do run the most extreme aircraft and airports available and the framework is proving its worth. The people who left a bad review here in this post clearly have no clue what they are talking about. Or if they do have an small idea you haven't ran the previous version to its maximum limits. The only suggestion I have for Dove-tail is keep up the great work. I hope to see more updates in the future fine tuning the system. Thank you.

I am very pleased with the program aircraft look great, panels great, and so on. My computer meets min requirements and aircraft perform pretty good anyway. For controls I use mouse and keyboard only, tried yoke, joystick, and pedals disappointed and returned them. One area I don't like is feedback from steam I have never received a response, same with cougar pilot. If it is that tricky to communicate with hq someone needs to ease up on the gate keepers. A state of the art fsx would be fantastic. Personally I don't use many of the default aircraft. My choice would be 2-3 big jets, 1-2 med jets, couple good props, virtavia coast guard heli, 2-3 fighter jets with simple ap much like f-16 but easier to see with gps and throttle control (dial up and down). A new improved standardized, simplified user friendly version of fsx sounds great. I use the fsx aircraft and they do pretty much what you tell the to do, I have lots of trouble using the cougar auto pilot, and the fsxpilot, all sorts of issues. One day works pretty good next hardly anything goes right?

I have a bag of mixed feelings about FSX. It runs fine most of the times and them lags a bit some other times. My system: AM2 4600+, 2gb DDR2 @667mhz, Asus 7600GT 256mb, 2x250gb Sata2 WD HDD, Audigy 2 ZS sound card.

Visuals are great, VC cockpits looks much realistic compared to default planes from the previous version, well 2004 had no VC to begin with. Landclass and texture resolution are improved for the most part for well know places. Water effects and looks are nice.

Sadly MS missed improving AI and ATC and there is something odd with the sounds too. But I don't know of anyone not running any kind of traffic enhancements so that is no biggie. Sure I wish they had done more but they didn't, I like looking around when flying to new and old familiar places so the improvements I see are good for me. I do fly with a VA so ATC and AI behaviour improvements are a sure miss, but at least multiplayer is way easier now that it used to be.

When it comes down to flaws, I will say only that ATC will be what I would be more dissapointed on.

I have FSX on my PC but the reinstallation process with the discs is a pain...so I bought the Steam Edition and, since the boxed version was working ok, I installed the Steam version on my laptop. It worked ok but I have to tweak the FSX.cfg file to make it run smoothly so I found the relevant file and made the necessary corrections. But FSX Steam didn't like that - so it wouldn't run the application. Deleted the edited file and let FSX recreate the default one..it worked...but the performance was very choppy. Uninstalled FSX STeam and reinstalled it - same choppy mess. Oh well I'll wait for an update. Then WinX beta came up so - I installed it on the laptop with FSX Steam as a testbed...WinX works but not FSX Steam - the Application will not run. So - I bought it for $5.00 during the first offering introductory price - no big loss. I would have been agitated if I had paid the full price though. For now FSX works on my PC with the necessary .cfg tweaks in place, but I still hope the Steam edition gets unkinked.

Disappointed. Buying and installing was a bit of an experiment, but according to the makers my older but dual-core PC system should have coped with it well. I previously used FS9.1 so installed FSX to a separate (Steam) folder as suggested by the system. Frame rates were poor, lots of 'stutters'. I had to disconnect from the internet and use it 'offline', to save bandwidth and processor capacity, so it was annoying to sit throught the "validating Steam" every time I started, but I didn't want to be 'online': my main interest was in buying and 'flying' the Majestic Dash 8 Q400. I thought the default scenery, say round London City, much better than FS9.1 but the autogenerated scenery, say in the countryside, much worse and unrealistic. I don't know whether there was any conflict, or problem with FSUIPC, but after installation of FSX, FS9 performance was terrible. Once I uninstalled FSX everything went back to normal. I guess I need a new computer.

I have used most flight simulators and found that FSX Gold is by far the best for graphics, simulation and expansion provided you have a decent pc setup.(Must be more than the recommended specs.) Regarding Dovetails Steam version, I have found it has smoother graphics than the Gold version but the simulation is the same. I find that the Steam Edition can be very poor when it comes to expansion, (Including Software and Hardware) either the add on won`t install because it is not compatible, or you have to fiddle about with the installer or a configuration file to make it work. All the best add on software works best with the original FSX Gold. "That`s what they were made for." Dovetail have built a reputation for charging very high prices for mediocre or old add on software for both their Train Simulator and Flight Simulator releases, which makes it a no brainer. "FSX GOLD IS THE BEST"

At last someone is trying to update FSX which sorely needs updating. From Steams point of view they are making excellent progress. Negative thinking by suppliers and Microsoft themselves seem to be trying to belittle the effort. It was always my opinion that MS limited a users freedom by requiring FSX to be placed in only one location on the C: drive. Yes, the installation gave you an option, but if you took it you would change back later as so many options will only look for the program at c:programs.... Currently many add-on suppliers are doing the same so that an airplane that should work on Steam's FSX will not as they do not give an option to use another directory. Obviously, this will change. Until then, you need to be sure an add-on you buy is compatible with FSX-SE. I am very happy with the performance of Steam Edition and can see improvements as the weekly upgrades are made.

Well, it works, works well on a PC. It's not the latest FSX, and the basic aircraft are pretty limited in quality and range. The Intro flights are FS, and the Steam Airspace is totally un-controlled. So it depends what you want. In Steam tradition you can buy more aircraft and join Steam Host areas. If you want to be a real Sim Pilot, with Human ATC (even if sparse at times) buy a PC based FSX, for a lap top buy the FS2004 which is less complex so works faster and more reliably). Join one of the many Virtual Airlines and they'll point you towards a Virtual Sky. IVAO and VatSim are the leading ones, I recommend both. There's always some real human ATC around, you can do that too if you know what you're doing. All the V.airlines rate their pilots, some, like FlyUK do full training programmes that simulate the real world with type licences based on experience (hours) flown.

Hey guys, i'm 18, and im going off to university to be educated within the pilot studies filed, with strong views to head off to flight school after. FSX is the most sophisticated, and advanced simulator ever to be invented by Microsoft within this particular field, however, the graphics card on my laptop, (directx9.0) is not powerful enough to run the game to it's optimum capacity. Therefore, I advise that people using FS2004, should continue using that game, until you upgrade your graphics cards. Im no expert on computers, but usually, most laptops do not allow you to update the graphics card, only the memory. However, when people are able to use FSX to a high capacity, the network of people from all over the world, bringin new users, to actual pilots will be so wide, that the ability to fly within real life situations will be imense. Happy flying!!

As soon as I started using FS Steam edition (in Windows 8.1), it was clear that there were some improvements in stability and performance, though the functionality remained the same. It works fine with my Black Widow controller too. It's fairly easy to install add-on scenery and planes, though you have to remember the (long.....) directory structure that FSX gets installed into in the Steam edition. There have been no add-ons specifically for Steam edition that are of any interest to me so far. The one irritation I have is the necessity to log into Steam before the package will work, even if you have the default set to Off-line mode - an unwelcome return to the days when you had to have the CD in your PC each time you started FSX. It's not a problem most of the time, but if I'm away with no access to the internet it's a pain.

As a long time FSX user (Since FSX 2003) I would not go back to the original. Though FSX STEAM Edition is at heart the old FSX it has been improved. The bugs that plagued FSX Gold SP2 seem to have gone. Steam have since release provided free upgrades and returned the core programme to a living system. There is talk of it being upgraded shortly to work with Windows 10 and likewise to make far more use of modern multicore CPUs and larger RAM. Most noticeably though steam verifies your account on line when logging on they now provide FSX-SE with a stand alone mode for when the internet connection fails. Much third party software built for FSX Gold seems to be compatible with FSX-SE and more is being certified. I look forward to flying under a live and improving simulator that remains compatible with changing Operating Systems.

I made the mistake of buying the Deluxe version, as I've been a fan of Flightsim for many years. We all fell in love with 2004, with it's friendly frame rates, and even with an AMD 3000+ processor, and an Nvidia FX 6600GT card, with 1 Gb. of ram, FSX was a flop. At one stage I got frame rates of 0.5 !! The "scenery" around London was abominable, with cardboard cutouts of the buildings. We all agree to scrap it, and returned to FS9 with a sigh of relief. It reminded me of the awful FS2000, which promised so much, but was too far ahed of the computers at that time. I feel Microsoft has let us down very badly, by not warning of the minimum specs to drive this thing. Luckily for me, Play.com gave me a full refund, so I'll wait to see what happens in the future.

FSX-Steam Edition, I love it..., as an owner of FSX Gold and Fsx-Steam Edition I have found the steam version to be better , It comes with an easy accessible online store it also has the Accelleration pack included , the store has addons with an easy install feature and all at a reasonable price , it also has an easy multiplayer feature and it takes away all the clutter of purchasing addon discs that fill-up shelves , it also fixes a lot of glitches that came with the boxed edition... I have noticed it runs smoother and now with a lot of the older products being brought upto FSX-Steam Edition aswell as new product releases and you still being aloud to install your boxed addons if you purchased them a while back you are going to love FSX-Steam Edition......

I found FSX Steam Edition to be somewhat of an improvement over FSX. I recently upgraded my Intel Core i7- 920 processor (2.66 GHz) to an Intel Core i7-975 (3.33 GHz) and I have 9GB of RAM installed. Graphics card is Nvidia GTX 550Ti. My frame rates, with some aircraft, went as high as 100FPS. Needless to say, I was indeed impressed. However, the FSX-SE Home page was quite annoying, and I did not like the pop-up ads. I also found FSX-SE to be not so user friendly when it came to getting updates. Getting an update was an enigma. I eventually uninstalled FSX-SE, and when I attempted to reinstall the program it was a nightmare. I am now running FSX Deluxe for the moment , but plan to buy Lockheed Martin- Prepar3D. I am really disappointed with Microsoft FSX.

The graphics are without a doubt very realistic as are the handling characteristics of the aircraft, my only concern is frame rates. I have arguably a very powerful computer with six times the amount of memory required to run the programme and the very best graphics card on the market also with masses of memory. As soon as you start to increase the level of detail the programme becomes sluggish and impossible to control. It is great having all the AI and realism but what is the use if you can't use it? I have decided to go back to FS version 9. I guess the guys at Microsoft must test the programme on a CRAY computer because nothing I do will get the programme to run smoothly on my computer. Dissapointed!!!

Not much has changed other than it works with 64bit windows now. The Scenery is the same. The G1000 has not been updated. There are tons of things that could have been changed but have been overlooked. I have no idea what Airac they are using but it is WAAY out of date the approaches are out of date. The Waypoints are out of date. You still have to put many many addons to get to approach something that resembles reality. Microsoft should just sell the whole product lock stock and barrel to Steam ie Dovetail. That way they could make the changes necessary. But we all know that won't happen since they aren't even willing to make Windows XP open source.

Steam version is good at giving us ways to manage the software such as verifying intergrety, backups etc. From my experience, i can say it works great, but make sure your computer meets the requirement. I have the box version and many comps they all worked good more or less. Some people look at FSX SE as a game. I think it is more than that, a hobby, You got to put some time in to tweaks. After a year of FSX I have gained a lot of aviation knowledge and skills. That its still here since the early 2000 means something and the great thing about it, today's new basic computers are catching up.

I'm not sure why there are any negative reviews regarding FSX steam edition. It is basically FSX but with all the quirks and annoying things that fsx had removed. It works flawless on wi downs 8.1 and Windows 10 both 64 Bit and 32 Bit. It is 100% more stable than FSX. I've had no problems running FSX ST edition. I did instal it from scratch on a clean version of Windows 10. Most of the issues people are having is because their Windows is not running well in the first place. My advice is to install on a clean windows (any version) and it will run perfect. Good luck. www.hireatechie.co.uk

Began with ProPilot and then entered the series of MS Flight Simulators starting with Flight Sim 5 and on up through the ranks and into MS Flight Simulator Gold w/accel. I will honestly say that the Steam Edition seems to run faster, smoother and I enjoy the additional aircraft. This is definitely the best simulator Microsoft has come out with and in my mind, it is better than P3D. My hats off to a great product here. The game is not what you'd expect from a developer like dovetail I expected a brand new experience with new upgraded graphics and the best of multiplayer a oth there because that's what they said I would be getting but what I got was a game that you fly planes in unprofessionally and in multiplayer air force one would ram you out the air before you can throttle back to cruising speed which sucks and I feel that this game could be a WHOLE lot better on all levels and am not pleased with the recent "update " they so call it even though there is no visible difference...

Absolute rubbish, have tried to install it twice and had nothing but problems with it, it is alright if you are happy with just running the programme and flying stock aircraft but when it comes to trying to install your addons it is a nightmare and you end up with a lot of expensive addons that you cannot use. I have reverted back to my Flight Simulator X gold edition which took quite a while to settle down again after Steam edition but no more problems. What is needed is a complete new flight simulation programme.

At first I was not so keen on Steam Edition because I had not figured out how to include the add-ons. However, once I was able to include almost all the add-ons I had on Microsoft FSX, I found the software very friendly. I had some issues on FS X which are no longer present in the Steam Edition. The software works beautifully, the control of the airplanes is better because the frame rate has been improved. In my opinion, the Steam Edition represents the upgrade of the previous FS X which I had wished for.

I have over 3 times the basic requirements of the new FSX and I'm very disapointed with the results. The frame rates are terrible and I can't even begin to run it on the settings that it should be able to run at. I think Microsoft owes it to it's customers to fix these problems.

I have a dual 3gig Xeon with 1gig ram and a 256meg pci-e video card, sata2 drives with more then 200gigs free. The whole visual experience is better with this version. Some visual effects, especially at dusk when flying towards the sun at 20,000 +, are amazing. The flying characteristics are the same as 2004. The only improvements that were made are in scenery and visual effects.

FSX Steam Edition is definitely a much better product than the default FSX, due to the fact that the code was recompiled to work on modern systems. Many users will see no difference between FSX and FSX Steam Edition as it is much the same as the default FSX visually. A lot of work has however been done under the bonnet to make it run smoother and I really appreciate it. Will I recommend FSX Steam? Nope! Why? It is a nice upgrade for FSX, but Prepar3D is still much better!

Hello Had no problems loading, as easy as the disc version and you can reload if necessary to me its not much different from the original. I installed Horizon VFR Photographic Scenery with no problems also I reinstalled some Just Flight aircraft ok. I did buy it when it was on offer so if you paid the full price and had problems with your hard ware and soft ware you might not be so happy I only use it basically it may not suit everyone. I have used FSX since its inception and had very few problems. I have bought many addons over the years and since converting to the Steam edition of FSX I am dissapointed that some addons will now not run (One such example is FS Discover which was very handy as it showed where airfields and other interesting places of interest were on the ground which made flights and navigation easier and more interesting. Hopefully this will be addressed in the future.

I also am very disappointed with FSX. The frame rates are too low and very jerky. My CH Flight Sim Yoke also is very jerky and hard to control any aircraft. My computer is very top of the line with plenty of memory and a Intel P4 Duel Core processor. It is not a computer lacking in memory or speed. The FSX is the problem. Mayber it will run smoother with the new Win operating system. Right now I am happy with and only use FS9.

I was late to the FSX game not purchasing it for alot of years until MSFlight came out. MSFlight made me love Flightsims and I purchased the dvds of FSX W/ Acceleration shortly afterwards. Once the game became available on Steam it was a no brainer to buy. You get better performance, multiplayer and all the addons from your favorite sites still work great! A definite best buy especially on Steam where it frequently goes on sale for less than $15.00 US

After buying FSX I upgraded my system to 2 gigs of RAM and replaced my 128 meg video card with a 256 meg card. The program works quite well now. I also recommend the CH Products Flight Sim Yoke. Forget about trying to fly with a mouse & keyboard. That would be a study in fustration.

You people who complain about how poorly the product preforms need to upgrade or else you will never be happy with it. FSX is for high end computers ONLY.

Both FSX and FSX Steam wont work with windows 10. The game loads but you cant make any changes to the settings. On start up the game resorts to the lowest resolution setting. If you try and change the resolution etc you just get a black screen and the mouse pointer. Cant close the game down either!! FSX worked fine with Windows 8. Both Steam and Microsoft say there are no problems with running Windows 10 with either simulator.

I was very happy with it until now though I don't seem to be able to introduce in it "My traffic X". Now I have a very big problema as having changed to Windows 10 nothing seems to work other than Free Flight. Trying to use the Pop-up menus the FS blakens the screen and then crashes. The same happens when using in the cockpit the Icons for the map or the GPS. Help !!!! Otherwise, and before, the FS was great. Best regards

Having upgraded to Win 10 I decided to upgrade to MS FSX Steam as well. Having used FSX since it's inception in the eighties with XP Professional and lately Win 7 64 bit I feel comfortable with FSX Steam running in Win 10 except for one small problem ie.cannot exit the program normally but I worked out a way to get around it. Have not tried to install add-ons which h I acquired in the old MS FSX running under Win 7 yet .

Good: 1. Looks beautiful. 2. Runs most add-ons that FSX runs them.

Bad: 1. Buggy DX 10. 2. Unpleasant connectivity to Steam. 3. Source is saved in a place not of my choice. 4. Installation in a BAD BAD place, i.e. under Steam.... 5. No performance improvement over FSX. 6. Internet connection for multi gamers is very poor, so why bother? 7. FS 2004 has better MMI. 8. Lacks a functioning SDK.

Disappointed. There were issues with the missions in FSX and I hoped they had been fixed. Not only are the problems still there but are even worse ones e.g. Instruments not loading. Tough to fly with no working instruments. I am going to look at some non-US airports to see if mountains and trees are still in runways and taxiways.

In all worth the 5 bucks but not a penny more.

I love Flight Sim X. If you are using a high end graphics card, which you should be doing with a simulator of this caliber, you shouldn't have any problems at all with frame rate. I have everything maxed out, and the graphics are absolutely gorgeous! Remember, your software is only going to be as good as your hardware! If your hardware can't handle it, it's time to upgrade!

Steam is a great way to play Microsoft flight simulator X, Its not perfect as I have some glitches that are slowly going away. I also feel its a tad ewxpensive to be able to fly many a different airplane. Steam trys to do a good job and I feel they will cure the problems now existing.. I will next try the Lockheed preparer to see what that brings to the table.

I have FSX Gold with the Expansion pack and I also have FSX Steam running on my computer. The computer is very high specification, 32gb of Ram and Intel core i5 with ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 video card and I have virtually all the customised settings at "max". "Straight out of the box" FSX Steam Edition is by far the better flight simulation programme.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition is a deep scam! Guests are subject to the dictates of that company, does not have the right to criticize and denounce their abuses, and leaders of this company absolutely refuse to listen to customers or read their emails or petitions. I STRONGLY DECONSEIILE to subscribe to Stean Edition!

FSX is a great simulator. It's good for serious pilots, or just for people who want to fly around!! Fsx is completely customisable and has hubdreds of freeware and pay ware files! I would reccomend fsx to anyone who has an interest in aviation. Even if you don't have an interest in aviation, Fsx is still good.

I bought FSX SE 4 months ago, but I prefer FSX gold edition! I didn't find any differences in SE! I thought that Scenery would be more accurate, but some airports, , even international ones, have just the runway! For exemple South America airports!MMMX; SEQM; MMGL;MMTJ ,etc. I don't like FSX SE at all!
