Designed to show off an old-school representation of the famous Loring Air Force Base, this addition for the Microsoft Flight Simulator X and the Acceleration Expansion pack gives you access to one of the most famous air bases on the planet. Designed on the mid-80s representation of the air base before it had the second runway included, this is the perfect way to see how it feels to leave one of the world’s most famous aviation spots.

The Microsoft Flight Simulator X series is popular for its realism and attention to detail, and the developer, Team SDB have worked endlessly to get everything just the way it should be in this realistic edition of the Loring Air Force Base. It has been the home to many massive and popular air force fighter jets over the years and you can see where they would be parked, and where they take off from, by using this simple addition for FSX.

Covering more than 9,000 acres, this realistic representation of one of the most famous air bases in recent US Army history can give you a picturesque feel of what being part of the day-to-day running of the base would be like. Whether you always wanted to experience the feel of flying around at the air base, or are looking to rekindle some old memories, then this scenery package for FSX might be ideal for you.

The History Of Loring Air Force Base

Loring Air Force Base is a former air base that was used for many, many years by the US Air Force. Found near Limestone, it was one of the largest bases during its operational years, until it was transferred to the Air Combat Command in 1992.

It was first initiated for construction as long ago as 1958, when the New England division decided that an air field was needed in the area. It’s the closest point between Europe and the USA, making it the best place to be situated.

The air base was home to many civilians, too. It held skilled individuals in the base who were active duty service members, providing easy and quick relocation to work every single day for those serving at the Loring Air Base. It played large roles in the Korean War, after Major Charles J Loring won a Medal of Honor during the Korean Wars.

It was finally closed in 1994 after over forty years of usage by the US Air Force. Today, it has been re-developed into an industrial estate. If you want to fly around the old base and see why at one stage it was the jewel in the crown of the US Army, then why not download this simple addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator X that can give you waves of nostalgia and hours of fun?

The Scenery

The air base was one which carried a huge amount of personnel, and trying to replicate that drama means that the air base is always witnessing activity. The theme of the design includes a constant introduction of B-52 and KC-135 planes arriving constantly throughout the day, as well as departing. This adds to the constant activity of ground staff, with the various weapons storage and technical areas in plain view around the air base. Additionally, F-15s perform landings and departures throughout the day, too, further strengthening the atmosphere around the base.

Throughout the air base, there is a significant collection of custom-built hanger designs and support buildings, made from scratch. The design ideas used here vary from traditional air base styles, so everything looks and feels the way it would have back in operation.

Throughout the airport there are many static planes of different classes strewn throughout. Always a busy place to be, the Air Field looks as packed as it was in full operation. There are plans ranging from B-52 Stratofortress bombers to KC-135A Stratotankers scattered around the air base and the skies above. As well as this, you will find some McDonnell-Douglas F-15A Eagles and a lone Lockheed C-141B Starlifter that is out of commission.

Features

With an enhanced aerial view ground polygon giving you a clearer and more detailed picture than ever before, the activity below is visible for as far as possible. By making sure that the air base stays active and alive for as far as the simulator will possibly allow, you can have a realistic take-off experience from one of the most renowned air bases in recent US Army history.

Additionally, there are night lights available to make sure that everything is as clear as possible should you be playing during the dark hours. This lights up the air base fantastically, giving you a truly remarkable sight as you bring your aircraft down for a textbook landing. The air base also incorporates a system that allows the ground textures to change depending on the season.

This lets you take off in style in the snow or in any way that you please – creation of this air base took into account the additional features that help really paint the picture for users of FSX. By providing you with an authentic creation of one of the most regularly used US Army bases of previous years, you get the full picture and design – including the weather.

Good simulation of Loring AFB. To get full product effects, you need to crank up the density level to extremely dense. If you don't do this you will not get the lighting effect over at the alert Christmas tree pads.

Extremely well done for the price. Details are very sharp, night lighting is great. Only down side is the lack of Ground Control options for parking. When requested, all I received was directions for departure.

This is a great scenery package. This is always active; I agree there should be more ATC options. I am not disappointed.
